Barbara Tran is the author of the prize-winning poetry collection In the Mynah Bird's Own Words, published by Tupelo Press. She is coeditor of Watermark: Vietnamese American Poetry & Prose and Beyond the Frame. Barbara's poems have appeared in Women's Review of Books, Ploughshares, and The New Yorker, as well as at the Williams College Museum of Art's exhibition "The Moon Is Broken: Photography from Poetry, Poetry from Photography." Honors include a MacDowell Colony Gerald Freund Fellowship, Bread Loaf Scholarship, Pushcart Prize, and Lannan Foundation Writing Residency. Barbara was featured in the documentary film Between the Lines: Asian American Women’s Poetry by Yunah Hong, and was a 2015 Writer-in-Residence at Hedgebrook

Barbara is a reward-based trainer, certified by Pat Miller, Training Editor for Whole Dog Journal, and by the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. She holds the Pat Miller Certified Trainer 1 (PMCT1) and Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Knowledge & Skills Assessed (CPDT-KSA) designations.


Barbara and her dog Tashi, a Washington Animal Rescue League adoptee, have together earned titles in Obedience in the US, and in Rally in the US and Canada.


Without Barbara, Tashi appeared in a Sam Gold production of Ibsen’s "A Doll’s House" at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Tashi’s costars included Lili Taylor and Tashi’s beloved Josh Hamilton. Tashi and Barbara are forever indebted to Josh for the kindness he showed Tashi during her stage debut.
